Lakeland Pilgrimage​

We have established a very different form of pilgrimage in the Lake District. Whereas pilgrimages typically culminate at a religious site, the Lakeland Pilgrimage considers the whole of the journey to be ‘holy’, and incorporates 7 natural ‘cathedrals’ – the natural wonders of Lakeland’s mountains.




A personal introduction

In this short film, John Fleetwood gives an insight into the thinking behind the pilgrimage with contributions from fell runner, Joss Naylor; climber, Leo Houlding; politician, Rory Stewart; and the then Bishop of Carlisle, James Newcombe.

About the Pilgrimage

This pilgrimage is a journey through the English Lake District that takes a road less travelled of 275km and 18,500 metres of ascent.  The wiggeldy-piggeldy route weaves some of the best bits of the Lakes together and was first completed in June 2016 by John Fleetwood.

Lake District Site of Special Spiritual Significance​

BTV is proposing to establish the Lake District as a ‘Site of Special Spiritual Significance’ (SSSS). SSSS designation will create an exemplar – a focal point for spiritual connection through nature – fostering both spiritual engagement and connection with nature.
